Blanc slate

Located in a hilly estate in the Northern suburbs of George. The steep site, surrounded by green area on two sides, was used as an opportunity rather than a liability. Cutting into the slope, bringing the perceived scale down, creating a semi basement. Ultimately presenting a modest single storey from the street, becoming a voluminous double storey towards the yard and green area beyond

The house is broken up into 3 main functional areas. Upper level for the garage, stepping down to the main house, which serves as a typical single storey house, wrapping a large semi courtyard stoep, providing cover from the typical coastal weather. Lastly, the lower floor contains the guest, service, and storage areas, which could function independently from the (mostly occupied) upper floor

The aesthetic is kept simple with gabled volumes, plaster detailing around openings, and white painted steel elements like pergolas and louvres. Finished overall with a light colour palette bag wash with face brick feature elements

The exterior material and colour palette extends inwards; the mainly white colours, textures and volumes are all part the spatial quality of the home. Exposed trusses and muted face brick walls bring the main volume together as the heart of the home
