The layout of this home is inspired by the client’s perfect holiday accommodation; a contemporary home with sleek interiors that belies its agricultural exterior. Except for the large gable windows, the exterior is almost shed like. Fine detailing with Steel, concrete, face brick and corrugated sheeting further contribute to the Highveld farm/industrial aesthetic. The floating shed rests on sleek concrete slabs supported by seemingly thin steel elements and/or a dark coloured lower volume
The entrance, hidden between the garage and study is discreetly announced with a concrete slab supported on a steel frame not touching the volumes next to it. The ground floor is a linear spatial organization, with extended pockets as the individual function requires. The kitchen and patio push from the main space, to define their own area. A high soffit height allows for the addition of a clere-storey type window for extra light. The stair sits as feature within the main living area in front of a large face brick wall. The bedroom placement speaks directly to its shed-like appearance from the outside. All the rooms are stacked next to each other, allowing great northern exposure while creating a gallery type walkway as a passage. Upstairs, the bedrooms have exposed trusses, with the addition of the gable windows, to also have the feel of a larger space. The gable windows are above line of sight, allowing ample light without affecting privacy
